The 1998 Zimbabwean Music Festival was held in Victoria, B.C., Canada, May 29, 30 & 31, on the campus of the University of Victoria. Over 300 performers, teachers, students and fans of Zimbabwean music lived on-site for the weekend and participated in over 75 workshops. The workshop schedule was packed with 12 workshops running simultaneously covering marimba, mbira, singing, dancing, drumming, hosho, chipendani and other topics. Zimbabwean mbira master Cosmas Magaya spent the weekend teaching, performing and inspiring us all, as did Chartwell Dutiro who brought his London-based group, Spirit Talk Mbira. There were more than 20 hours of concerts featuring 28 performing groups. As the MC for all 3 evening concerts, Zimbabwean-American Lora Chiorah-Dye led the crowd in traditional songs and stories, adding a wonderful, energetic, and at times hilarious touch to the shows. Daily village meetings and the village marketplace added their own special flavors. The magnitude of the event was very powerful and inspiring: 3 days packed with great music and friendly musicians non-stop. A huge THANK YOU! to all the volunteers who worked so hard to produce this amazing event.
