Welcome to the registration guide for the sixth Zimbabwean Music Festival. This gathering and celebration brings together an international community of students, teachers, performers, and fans of Zimbabwean music. This year's Festival, the first ever in Canada, will be held in Victoria, British Columbia, on May 16, 17 and 18 at the University of Victoria. The Festival spans three days and nights of concerts and workshops surrounded by a weekend village market. Daytime and evening concerts will showcase numerous performers ranging across the musical spectrum of Zimbabwean music, from the deeply traditional to the jumping electric guitar driven dance grooves of more recent years. Saturday will feature a Pungwe-style jamboree from noon to midnight, right in the heart of our festival village. Workshops offered this year include mbira, chipendani, drumming, marimba, dancing, singing, hosho, storytelling, gumboot dancing, instrument building and repair, as well as presentations on different aspects of Zimbabwean culture and music. Workshops are participatory - you learn by doing. Village Meetings convene daily for discussion of issues which affect our community. Local merchants, in conjunction with exhibitors from afar will be set up in our Market throughout the weekend, selling fresh produce, clothing, crafts, instruments and recordings. There will be a community African Dinner (for both vegetarian and meat eaters) on Friday evening, and food will be available on an informal basis from booths, shops and cafeteria throughout the weekend. Options for Housing and Childcare are available. The Festival Village will be set up in and around the Student Union Building (SUB) at the University, where workshops, concerts and accommodation are all within easy walking distance. The village of Cadboro Bay, with its shops, pub and adjacent park and beach is a ten minute walk from the festival site. Many of the participants at the Festival are North Americans who can trace their involvement in Zimbabwean music back to one man - Dr. Dumisani Maraire. Dumi inspired an incredible interest and passion in the music of his culture during his residency in Seattle from 1968 to 1990. He taught a generation of students who have since passed their knowledge along to hundreds of others. For many this music is life-enhancing, for some, life-changing. Through this music we have formed new and vital connections. We are now a vibrant community linked to the music, culture and people of Zimbabwe, and much of the credit for this is Dr. Maraire's. We are, therefore, pleased and honoured to announce Dumi's participation in this year's festival. Dr. Maraire will be the first Zimbabwean artist brought to the Festival under the newly established Mai Chi Bursary, completing a circle he started 28 years ago. In this registration guide you will find two schedules of events (one summarized, the other detailed), descriptions of each of the community events and workshops, and brief biographies of the workshop teachers. If you plan to attend, look this page over carefully, then obtain, fill out and send in your registration application. Notes about this year's Festival
Zimbabwean Teachers and Performers
At the time of publication (March 23), the following teachers and performers from Zimbabwe have confirmed verbally their intention to be at the Festival: Dr. Dumisani Maraire, Benita Tarupiwa and Bajabulile Zikalala-Ndlovu.Black Umfolosi will be traveling from Seattle to Calgary and we are hoping they will join us on Sunday evening.
The Registration Process
Observer status has been dropped. We have tried to offer enough workshop spaces for everyone to participate. For special circumstances please inquire.We will be trying a different registration format. Registration Forms should not be mailed before April 16th. If we receive your form and it is postmarked before April 16th it will be received as if it was postmarked on April 16th. PLEASE help us out by waiting until...April 16th to mail in your Registration Form. Forms will be processed based on the postmark date and then by luck of the draw.
If you would like confirmation that your form and money was received include a self-addressed postcard (with NO postage) when you mail in your Registration Form and we will send it to you confirming that everything was received. This is cheaper and easier for us than a phone call, so please take the time to do this rather then phoning.

The Weekend Schedule
In trying to offer more performance time per band, the 12 hour pungwe was born. From 12 noon to 12 midnight on Saturday we will dance the hours away amongst the Village Market hustle & bustle.On Saturday, happening at the same time but independently of the pungwe, two new Festival offerings will also be taking place:
Drop-in workshops - 1 hr introductory workshops open to everyone. Sign up on-site beginning Saturday morning at 9 am on a first-come first-served basis. Fees: $5 Cdn per workshop.
Adjudication sessions - An opportunity for bands to spend one-on-one time with a teacher. The objective is for the teacher to praise the strengths of the piece being played, to comment on performance style and finally to offer suggestions for improvement. Bands should come prepared to present 1 - 3 songs. The fees for a 1 hour private session will be $52 Cdn. Teachers available for adjudication are Claire Jones, Larry Israel, Michael Breez and Sheree Seretse.

A community African Dinner will take place on Friday evening in the Multipurpose room of the Student Union Building. Vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals will be prepared and served by the local African community. Price: $7 CdnVillage Meetings
We would like to welcome EVERYONE to the Village Meetings, an important part of this year's Festival, which will gather daily to discuss issues that affect our community. Friday's Village Meeting will focus on the community at present, how we see ourselves evolving, positive projects to set in motion, and ways in which to bring the entire community closer together. At the end of this meeting there may be some obvious directions for these group discussions to take. Some suggested topics for Saturday and Sunday meetings include: band dynamics, traveling in Zimbabwe, and how best to support and guide our North American teachers. We encourage people new to the Zimbabwean music world, as well as the veterans, honoured teachers and experienced performers to share their views and do any research beforehand that might add to these areas of interest.

This year's Festival may have you talking with folks who speak in a foreign dialect, dealing with a different, colourful currency and looking up some strange words you may not find in your dictionary. Here are a few tips to help out along the way...$1 US = $1.30 Cdn (approximately)

Stephen Golovnin May 14 & 15
Two 3 hour evenings devoted to learning a marimba arrangement of an mbira piece. The piece will be presented in small ensemble arrangement (2, 3, or 4 parts) as well as full ensemble. Alternate modal arrangements will be explored and variations and interplay between parts will be developed.

This workshop will focus on the instrument and it's keys. Some insights will be offered so you can begin to understand this ancient instrument of Zimbabwe. We will also explore how to get different sounds for the mbira as well as feeling and hearing the rhythm of it's music.

A song for 7 marimbas plus hosho, Manhanga Kutapira combines the vibes from the cultural "Jiti" dance gatherings with the unique descriptive lyrics of the Shona tribe of Zimbabwe. This song talks about how a farmer calls on his neighbours to come and enjoy the sweet manhanga (pumpkins) he has
harvested from his crop.

In this workshop we will explore in depth the Shona musical concepts of 'Leader and Response.' We will explore different kinds of variations and how to most appropriately use them in an ensemble setting. In other words, we will begin to learn how to communicate through music.

In this workshop we will explore the role of the lead as a 'story' of a piece or song. We will learn how to create an interesting and exciting story. We will also explore different lead techniques that can be used to enliven the story.

Traditional and Modern Shona Singing

We will learn Chimurenga songs, singing to accompanying mbira and marimba, as well as looking into the adaptations modern singing has taken on to address modernization. In addition, if time permits, we might experiment with using the fundamentals of a Shona song to create and compose our own song that might speak to our own unique situations.

CHIPENDANI
Introduction to Chipendani

Experience the elements of playing chipendani, a one-stringed mouth bow. We will learn the basics of plucking, overtones and singing and try them out on the song Ndabayirwa Chuma Changu. A few instruments will be available for participants to share during the workshop. If you can bring one, please call Russ in advance at (510) 763-1722.

Lora will teach some different dance steps from different tribes in Zimbabwe. Also a warm up and cool down, and some different steps from other parts of Africa.

Jabu specializes in teaching Women's dances which include a variety of styles with emphasis on dances from Southern and Eastern Zimbabwe. Costume making to suit special dances may be covered, if time permits and there is interest.

Gumboot dancing originated in the gold mines of Southern Africa, and is found in Zimbabwe. It consists of rhythmical stomps & slaps, along with vocalizations. Fun and energetic, gumboot dancing is finding a new home on the West Coast everyone has gumboots! Sherry will teach a dance brought to Canada by Themba Kunene.

Dumi will analyze Shona music through the 'textural' components of pieces (rhythm, melody, harmony) and how these components are blended to create the entire presentation of a piece or song. This workshop will explore the heart of Shona music and is highly recommended for advanced players
wishing to play, arrange, or compose music in a Shona style.
Lecture format with examples.

A slide show presentation of instrument makers, performers, and their instruments. Commentary with lots of anecdotes and taped excerpts. This show will essentially be the same as Claire gave at the 1995 Festival in Seattle.

We will discuss the role of mbira music in the bira ceremony. An overview of the ceremony will be presented as well discussion on the contact with the ancestors, and other realms. These issues are fundamental to the purpose and importance of Shona music.

All of us would love to live in a world without racism. Although we did not create it, we can often feel that we are stuck with it. Racism messes up our lives whether we notice it everyday or we aren't aware of it at all. We can dismantle racism and free each other to have better lives. Because of the different roles that racism forces upon people of color, white people and people of mixed heritage, each have different kinds of work to do to eliminate and recover from racism. Some of this work can be done most effectively by meeting separately. For this workshop, I strongly encourage all white people attending the ZMF97 to join me for an afternoon of fun and this immensely important work. Our day will include:
(1) how we've benefited from and been hurt by oppression based on skin color
(2) taking pride in ourselves as white people
(3) next steps to a liberated music community and world

A hands-on, make your own custom set of mallets type of workshop. Various densities and thicknesses of neoprene will be available as well as wooden handles and necessary tools. Some time will be spent going over the whys and wherefores of stick lengths, rubber hardness and methods of attachment. 2 or 3 pairs may be accommodated, time allowing.

A class on all sorts of fun approaches to tuning marimba notes. Once the basics are out of the way, we will delve way deep into overtones, the whys, wheres, what ifs and how not tos. Right before your eyes will be a live demonstration of a piece of wood being transformed, as if by magic, into a well tuned marimba note.

MyLinda King Sun. 11-3pm
Participants will receive hands-on instruction in making your own pair of hosho from raw, dried gourds. Activities will include scrubbing the exteriors, drilling a cork hole, cleaning out the insides, carving corks and optional decorating with a wood burner and dremel. A video will also be shown and advice given on growing and drying your own gourds. Each participant will be supplied with two gourds, corks, hota seeds if avail able (popcorn if not), and a few maranka seeds.
Additional $15 supply fee to be paid to teacher.

Storytelling: A Taste of Magic on an African Theme

You will be led gently and painlessly into the world of telling. Our time together will include movement, music, listening, laughter, rediscovering your imagination and of course storytelling. Come as you are, no paper, no pencil.

Workshop Teachers

Bajabulile Zikalala-Ndlovu specializes in teaching Women's dances which include a variety of styles, with an emphasis on dances from Southern and Eastern Zimbabwe. She lives in Bulawayo, and is working to improve the standard of performing arts in Zimbabwe, especially for women.
Benita Tarupiwa was born in 1971 in Mhondoro, Zimbabwe and now lives in Harare. She started playing mbira when she was four years old. She has her own group known as Negombwe Mbira Group and is planning on releasing a CD.
Chris "Murewa" Berry has spent the past nine years studying, touring, and performing in Africa and the U.S. He has collaborated, choreographed, and performed with the National Ballet of Zimbabwe, the National Dance Company of Mozambique, Ballet du Congo, and Black Umfolosi. Chris now resides in New Mexico, where he uses his knowledge of Shona language and traditional music to inspire and teach others. His group Panjea, has just released a CD.
Claire Jones studied and performed Shona music with Dumisani Maraire from 1976 through 1982, and began teaching marimba and mbira in 1983. She lived in Zimbabwe from 1985 until 1990, where she performed mbira with Mhuri yekwa Muchena and taught marimba in the schools. Claire returned to Seattle in 1990, where she was a performing member of Kutamba and Musango marimba bands. She is currently playing in the mbira group Mahonyera, and is a teacher of mbira and marimba.
Dean Samuel is a founding member of Marimba Muzuva and has been playing marimba since 1992. In 1994 he traveled with Muzuva to Zimbabwe where they studied marimba with Farai Gezi. Dean also studied mbira in Zimbabwe with Musa Chihota and Lovett Paradzai.
Dr. Dumisani Maraire taught and performed Shona marimba music, Nyunga Nyunga, singing, drumming and dance in Seattle from 1968-82 and from 1986-90. He is the founder of the Zimbabwean music community here in the Western U.S. and Canada. In 1990, Dumi earned his Doctorate from the University of Washington in the School of Music and returned to teach at the University of Zimbabwe in Harare.
Gwen Toevs has been playing and performing with Dandaro Marimba Ensemble for the last 4 years. She lived and studied mbira, singing,and dance with Tute Chigamba and the Mhembero Dance Company in Zimbabwe for 4 months. She is presently teaching and performing in the San Francisco and Santa Cruz Area.
Jennifer Kyker was born a little over seven months before Zimbabwe declared independence in April of 1980. In January, 1995, this fifteen year old boarded a plane to visit that fifteen year old and to study mbira for seven months. Jennifer lives in Eugene, Oregon, and plays marimba with Kudana. She has been learning Shona music for seven years.
Kelly Takunda Orphan is an enthusiastic student, teacher and performer of Zimbabwean music and dance. Her curiosity led her to spend a year living in Zimbabwe, where she attended the University of Zimbabwe and studied dance and music with the Chigamba Family. Currently Kelly resides in Oakland, California where she teaches music and movement, co-directs the World Music Choir at San Jose State University and is a member of Tatenda Music and Dance Company.
Lora Lue Chiorah-Dye performs and choreographs for Lora and Sukutai Marimba and Dance Ensemble. She has taught dance classes since the mid-70's and has been teaching African dance, music, and games for the Washington State Arts Commission for five years. Lora was born and grew up in Zimbabwe, and now lives in Seattle.
Michael Breez initiated his studies of Zimbabwean music in 1978 with Dumisani Maraire and began teaching in 1984. Since 1980 Michael's teaching and performing experiences have taken him to Africa, Canada, Hawaii, and throughout the United States. Michael, along with Osha Breez, directs Musasa Marimba Ensemble and the Rufaro School of Marimba, both in Friday Harbor, Washington.
MyLinda Liebezeit King studied classical piano at The Oberlin Conservatory. After moving to Portland she was swept away by the sounds of a marimba band and joined Boka Marimba in 1989. She currently acts as the band's manager and musical director and teaches marimba lessons in her home and in the Portland Public schools. MyLinda also enjoys growing and making hosho and is the author of the book, Making Your Own Hosho.
Najema Shtull is a founding member of Victoria Storytelling Guild established in 1989. She has told 'stories' in schools, University of Victoria, in festivals throughout Canada and the U.S. Being a mother has been a strong motivator to become a storyteller. She loves to tell stories to adults and delights in their surprise at their own enjoyment!
Neck of the Woods Marimba Ensemble is a nine member band from Nelson, BC that has been together since 1993. They brought over Sydney Maratu in November '96 to live with them and teach them as Nelson is relatively isolated from teachers in the North American marimba/mbira community.
Paul Tendai Mataruse is a first year representative of Zimbabwe at Pearson United World College of the Pacific in Victoria, BC. Paul has been playing marimba for 12 years and was taught by his father at the age of six. Paul has taught in schools in and around the Mashonaland West Province of Zimbabwe as well as in several Primary Schools in Harare from 1992 to 1995.
Rujeko Dumbutshena was born and raised among the Shona people of Zimbabwe and has a rich life steeped in the ancient music and dance traditions of her people. In 1991 Rujeko left Zimbabwe and since that time has taught classes, lectured and performed all over the US and Canada. She is currently living in New Mexico and performing with Panjea.
Russell Landers has played, performed, and taught Shona music since 1983, specializing in mbira dzaVadzimu, chipendani, hosho, and singing. His principal teachers have been Tute Chigamba, Mondrek Muchena, Frank Gomba, Ephat Mujuru, Newton Marapuza, and Simon Meshoko. He lives in Oakland, California, and performs both solo and together with Our Spirits Blend Together, Mutupo Mbira Group, and Takunda Dance Ensemble.
Sarah Noll has been playing Shona music since 1990. In 1991, she traveled to Zimbabwe and was fortunate to study dance and hosho with Irene Chigamba, Abel Mukuchura, Mondrek Muchena, and Clayton Ndlovu. She now performs with Takunda Music and Dance and teaches music and movement to children.
Sherry Kirkvold has been playing with Marimba Muzuva since 1992. Her talents have evolved from a multi-textured background in music and dance, including time spent studying dance with the Chigambas in Zimbabwe. Sherry first learned Gumboot dancing from Louis Philippe, a resident of Quebec who teaches dances brought to Canada from Africa by Themba Kunene.
Stephen Golovnin is a long-time aficionado of Shona music and holds a PhD in mbira and marimba tweaking. He is currently interested in playing mbira music on marimba in small ensembles of two or three as well as in full ensembles. Stephen lives in Seattle.
Sydney Maratu was born and grew up in Harare, Zimbabwe, surrounded by the music of mbira, marimba, drums, guitars and hosho. Sydney played mbira with Ephat Mujuru, Sekuru Gora, Mondrek Muchena, Mude Mhuri Yekwarwizi, Rising Power, and with his family band The Maratu Brothers. His own band Mambakwedza, recorded and traveled to Mozambique, Angola, Zambia, and London. Sydney taught part-time at the Zimbabwe College of Music in Harare with Ephat Mujuru for 5 years. The School of Ethnomusicology was subsequently formed from this College.
Ted Wright has spent the past 4 years letting Shona music seep into his system in a compulsive act of human percolation. He studies, teaches and performs mbira, marimba, and gumboot dancing, and is a member of Marimba Muzuva. He lives in Victoria.
