Zimfest 2004 Update
July 16

Workshop Changes

We are excited to announce that David Tafaneyi Gweshe will be at Zimfest teaching classes on mbira, marimba, storytelling, singing, and dance. He will also speak on spirituality and the history of Shona culture. David Gweshe is a spiritual leader, cultural historian, instrument maker and developer, composer, and choreographer. He also invented and plays an amazing mbira of four and a half octaves and 56 keys.

We are also excited about bringing Zivanai Masango to Zimfest. He will be teaching marimba and guitar. Zivanai, one of Zimbabwe’s premier guitarists, has played lead guitar with Thomas Mapfumo and taught classes recently at Camp Tumbuka.

We unfortunately also have to announce that Nicholas Manomano is unable to make it to Zimfest (his visa has not come through in time). We will be working with David, Zivanai and others to replace his classes.

For details of the workshop changes, see the July 29 Update.

Volunteer Party

We’re throwing a party on August 1st. Find out how you can get involved in putting on Zimfest! Come at 4:00 pm to help us put together registration packets, or come by 6:00 to hear what volunteer needs there are, and sign up for specific times to help. We’ll provide snacks and mbira playing for all. The party will be at People’s Food Co-op, 3029 SE 21st Ave., Portland, upstairs in the meeting room.

We appreciate all of the help we’ve had so far and look forward to meeting more of you next month!!
