Marimba

Introduction to Marimba

Participants will be introduced to the marimba and beginning Shona musical concepts. The material presented is inspired by the teachings of the late Dr. Dumisani Maraire. There will be a brief explanation of the history of marimba in the US and then participants will explore the structure of music played on marimba through the learning of a very simple teaching piece.

Beginning/Intermediate Marimba: Ingubo Yami

Students will learn Dumisani Maraire’s marimba arrangement of Ingubo Yami, “I want my skin back,” a Shona folk tale. The arrangement includes changes by all the other parts in response to the lead, therefore it provides an excellent example of how the whole band can follow as the lead ascends and descends.

Getting Serious with Kapotso

In this workshop Stephen will use Kapotso to apply the principles of kukambira, call and response, and variations in the Dumi style. He will address interactions between all the players, and how to make the music flow and come alive for the musicians and the audience. Students should already be familiar with several parts to Kapotso.

Intermediate Marimba: Izwaiwo Kuchema

Learn Claire’s marimba arrangement of Izwaiwo Kuchema (“Hear Our Cries”). The late Dumisani Maraire recorded this gospel song on nyunga nyunga in 1986 after the death of his brother Nkosana in Zimbabwe. Chiwoniso Maraire, then 10 years old, sang the lead vocals on the 7" single in her first commercial recording.

Intermediate Marimba: Isu Tauya Pano

Learn a chimurenga song from the repertoire of Dumi and the Maraire Marimba Ensemble, dating from the end of Zimbabwe’s war of liberation. Claire will teach parts for 7 marimbas, hosho, ngoma and vocals.

Claire will teach Dumi Maraire’s arrangement of this mbira dza vadzimu piece for 7 marimbas plus hosho. This song is a good one to start with if you have never played any mbira on marimba. (NB – this is the same song as Karigamombe – “Bringing Down the Bull”).

Intermediate Marimba: Variations I

Explore the beginning variation concepts. Learn how to apply these concepts to several different parts on different pieces. Explore the concept of ‘basic pattern’ and how to be certain that the basic pattern is not inappropriately altered in the process of doing variations. The concept of interactive playing will be introduced.

Prerequisite: Players must be able to comfortably play all parts to Kapotso (ala Dumi) as well as have a basic handle on Chemwainyera, Mangwanani, and Zomba.

Intermediate Marimba: Variations II
